The muscles of mastication I
The masticatory muscles are those that move mandible; there are principal and accessory muscles and they are classified into elevators and depressors. The principal elevator muscles include the temporalis, the masseter and the medial pterygoid muscles; the principal depressor muscles are the lateral pterygoid and the digastric. The accessory muscles are the anterior belly of the digastric, the mylohyoid and the geniohyoid (3)(6)(7).
