Many complimentary hygiene aids exist for the toothbrush, and that the dentist should recommend to his patients according to their individual needs. Dental floss is the interdental hygiene element of choice in patients with no periodontal problems. There are many types of dental floss, some of which have a stiff end in order for the patient to pass it between the teeth when restorations such as dental bridges are present. Interdental toothpicks are used to clean the interdental space when this has increased in size due to periodontal problems. Special brushes exist to clean the tongue, enabling bacterial plaque to be removed from this region as, in many cases, this is often the cause of problems of halitosis (4)(8)(24).
